Heart Failure in Primary Care Symposium 2024

Dr. Robert Stevenson

Rob Stevenson is originally from Fredericton. He joined the New Brunswick Heart Centre in 2008 after completing his cardiology training at Dalhousie University. His undergraduate studies were in science at UNB. His clinical interests include coronary critical care, echocardiography, cardiac rehabilitation, smoking cessation and therapeutic hypothermia post cardiac arrest.

Dr. Sherief Kamel

Sherief Kamel is a cardiologist at The Moncton Hospital with special interest in heart failure and is strongly involved in the Heart Function Clinic.  He is originally from Saint John NB and did a BSc in Biochemistry at UNB prior to medical school and residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

Dr. Emily Love

Dr. Emily Love is  a palliative medicine physician working in Saint John NB. Originally from the Saint John area, she went to medical school at University of Ottawa, followed by her family medicine residency with Dalhousie in Saint John. She always had a passion for working in palliative medicine which led her to an  additional year of training at the University of Calgary where she  received her Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care. In 2023 she received her Royal College designation.  Dr. Love has  been working full time in both inpatient and outpatient palliative medicine since 2018. Outside of clinical work, Dr. Love  teaches professional competencies and communication skills to students at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick. She also teaches residents, and is president of the New Brunswick Hospice Palliative Care Association.

Rochelle Johnston

Rochelle Johnston graduated from the Dalhousie University BScPharm program in 2008 and completed her hospital pharmacy residency at The Moncton Hospital in 2009. From 2009 to present, she has practiced as a clinical pharmacist with the CCU team at The Moncton Hospital. After obtaining a collaborative practice licence with the cardiologists at the Moncton site, she expanded her practice into the outpatient Heart Function Clinic in 2015 with a focus to improve access and prescribing of GDMT for heart failure patients. Her clinical and research interests include heart failure pharmacotherapy optimization, iron deficiency diagnosis & treatment, thrombosis, and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events.

Dr. Martin MacKinnon

Dr. Martin Mackinnon studied at the  Medical School at Dalhousie University, Internal Medicine and Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Mackinnon is a  Certified Hypertension Specialist, which he received through the American Society of Hypertension. Dr. Mackinnon's clinical and research interests  are : Renal replacement therapy-Hemodialysis, Complicated Hypertension and Continuous quality improvement. He's also a proud dad of three boys Malcolm, Morgan and Maxim.

Dr. Aimee Noël

Dr. Aimee Noël is a cardiologist and advanced heart failure specialist who joined the New Brunswick Heart Center in 2021. After earning her medical degree from the Université de Sherbrooke, she then completed an internal medicine residency at Dalhousie University. Her journey continued with an adult cardiology residency at Queen's University, followed by advanced heart failure and transplant fellowship training at the McGill University Health Centre. In 2023, Dr. Noël became co-chair of the NB Heart Failure Network reflecting her dedication to advancing heart failure care in her home province of New Brunswick.

Dr. Anique Ducharme

Dr. Ducharme graduated from Université de Montréal in 1991 in Medicine (MD) and Biomedical sciences (MSc, cardiac transplantation) and completed her residency in Cardiology in 1996. She pursued additional training in Echocardiography at the Montreal Heart Institute, then in Molecular Biology and Heart Failure at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston. Since her return in 1999, she has held a position in the Non-invasive Cardiology department at the Montreal Heart Institute, where she carries out activities in echocardiography, advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation.

Dr. Michel D'Astous

Dr Michel D’Astous finished his cardiology training at Université Laval in 1993 and has been working at the CHU Dumont since then. Initially the only cardiologist, he is now part of a team of 6 cardiologists He practices general cardiology involving all aspects of this speciality with a particular interest in heart failure, arrhythmia management and echocardiography.

 

He has been primary or secondary investigator in numerous landmark trials such as CURE and ARTESIA. Actively involved in CME at provincial and regional levels as well as Associate Clinical professor with Université de Sherbrooke ( Moncton Campus-CFMNB). Member of numerous provincial comities and associations ( including Board member of NB Heart and Stroke).

Kerrin Green

Kerrin Green is originally from Grand Manan. Since finishing her bachelor of nursing degree at the University of New Brunswick- Saint John, Kerrin has had the opportunity to work in various areas within Atlantic Canada. Currently working as an Interventional Cardiology Nurse Associate at the New Brunswick Heart Centre and a Clinical Cardiology Nurse Specialist in the office of Dr. Rob Stevenson, local Cardiologist. She is passionate about her career as a Registered Nurse with CNA certification in Cardiovascular Nursing.
